What could be more exciting than a new season of BBQ Pitmasters? How about breaking news that Chicago’s own, Buedel Fine Meats, is the Season 5 meat supplier for the hit show?
Wooo doggie! Fire up the smokers, it’s time to get your “low and slow” on…
BBQ Pitmasters is a competition barbeque/reality show. Started in 2009, the new season premiered this month on Destination America, part of the Discovery family of networks. Each week, 3 teams of two people, compete to advance to the semi-finals and a coveted slot at the Kingsford’s Invitational (and $50,000 purse) later this year.
The show contestants are judged by professional pitmasters. Moe Cason, Tuffy Stone, (aka “The Professor”) and the granddaddy of barbeque, Myron Mixon. Known as “the winningest man in barbeque” due to the number of championships he’s won – nearly 2,000 – Mixon is a Celebrity Chef, best selling cookbook author and owns a company dedicated to building the best smoker.
For those of you not familiar with the world of competition BBQ, it’s absolutely HUGE! So much so, Food Republic actually wrote about Barbeque Tourism earlier this year – yes, there is such a thing – where people travel just for barbeque.
America’s BBQ community is laced together by regional organizations. There are barbeque associations and societies named for the Mid-Atlantic, South Carolina, Memphis, Lone Star, New England, Pacific Northwest, Florida and Kansas City areas, to name a few.
The Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) is considered to be the eldest and largest group of its kind. In the month of April, there were 40 KCBS sanctioned scheduled competitions across the US alone. The exact number of total competitions over the course of a year is hard to pinpoint. Outside of the “majors”, regional and state competitions, the number of local competitions are tough to enumerate.
What makes this culinary culture most unique to the industry is its competitive structure – stars are made by cook-offs, not Michelin – and virtually anyone can compete. Winning competitions is the gateway to other culinary and related business endeavors.
When BBQ Pitmasters approached Buedel in their search for a new meat company who could deliver both, superior meats and professional service, were were thrilled to get the call. Since then, our experience has been no less than fantastic working with them and we are very proud to be a part of the show.
Buedel Ham, Beef Brisket, Vegas Strip Steak and Prime Rib Roast have been in the clutches of competition thus far. (We’re bound not to tell you what’s on the horizon before it airs.) The skills, sweat and “secret sauce” the pit teams put into the challenge is amazing. Watching them in action is absolutely entertaining and learning.
New episodes air on Saturday nights, (8 pm CST), in tandem with replays of Season 5’s previously aired episodes each week. Stay tuned…much more to come!
